The shipping minister tells Cornwall he has not made up his mind yet over proposals to cut coastguard cover. Mike Penning has been in Falmouth this morning as part of the consultation which ends on 5th May 2011. The government has already said it wants to see the number of stations around the UK fall from eighteen to ten. This would see Brixham closed and Pendennis Point losing its 24 hour manning.

Mr Penning was invited by Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton. He has told her that the consultation process is not a done deal and that he has safety in mind… but things have to be modernised.
