Cornwall’s leading business lights are likely to be nursing sore heads following the Hub Awards 2010. The Duchy’s employees, entrepreneurs and start-ups were celebrated at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. It was all about the dedication and drive that is making other parts of the UK watch Cornwall’s progress with serious interest.

The main ceremony was preluded with a satirical film about an evil version of Aren Grimshaw (social media expert) kidnapping the nominees. It was an innovative way to introduce the stars of the ceremony – formulated and shot by Sideways Cornwall.
The keynote speech at this plush occasion was given by Chris Hines MBE, founder of Surfers Against Sewage. The environmentalist and campaigner praised the Duchy’s entrepreneurial spirit and drive in the face of a tough economic climate. His speech was also about the spirit of commitment and how important it was in building innovative companies. Chris talked about how he started with ‘two crummy A-levels’ but ended up being praised for putting the government under pressure. The MBE holder also went through the process of taking the problem he was faced with when he began SAS and how he developed the campaign through using the media, politics and out-of-the-box thinking. His top quote of the night: “Be passionate and be unrealistic!”
